Voltaire criticized both the Christian religion, which has supernatural elements, and atheism. His religious viewpoint was tolerant Deism, and he found Confucianism, as a philosophical system, to be its closest equivalent, free from superstition and fanaticism. Voltaire saw Confucius as the ideal Deist and representative of Deism, which he presented as a substitute for revealed religion. The encounter of Confucius provided Voltaire with an opportunity to fundamentally reflect on European civilization and Christianity.
We have conversations between Confucius and his followers in which there is nothing definite further than a commonplace moral put in the form of good, sound doctrine, which may be found as well expressed and better, in every place and amongst every people. Cicero gives us De Officiis, a book of moral teaching more comprehensive and better than all the books of Confucius. He is hence only a man who has a certain amount of practical and worldly wisdom — one with whom there is no speculative philosophy.
「There’s a famous quote that says, ‘If the human brain were so simple that we could understand it, we would be so simple that we couldn’t.’」
这部剧的前言里也先定了个基调「In the world of brain sciences, our understanding changes all the time.」
大脑的“混乱”状况不是第一次有人讲,编剧的例子代入感很强了,已经开始抓狂了,而「The neocortex does this with the reptile brain all the time.」
好些状况都适用这一句「And this would be fine if that was all the brain does. But it doesn’t. So it isn’t.」,一腔无奈哈。
然而编剧说小孩子抽得多,因为神经系统还没发育完全,当然大人也会抽,毕竟「In many ways we never truly get rid of all the glitches and kinks in such complicated systems」…
「Sophisticated results in vulnerability, it seems.」
关于海马体,果不其然有伦敦出租车司机的例子,不过编剧补了一句「These studies were conducted mostly in the days before satnavs and GPS though, so there’s no telling how they’d pan out now.」
